Cupping is a great tool to have as a massage therapist or health care practitioner, it helps blend old world healing with today’s practice. The benefits to your patients are varied and can include; increased circulation, decrease fascial restrictions, increase range of motion and many other benefits all with minimal effort from you as a therapist. For you a therapist, it is a fantastic method for self-healing, maintenance and cupping will help extend your career. Cupping is a technique whereby a vacuum (negative pressure) is created in the cup, drawing the skin (fascia) up into the cup and separating the layers of fascia. The vacuum effect allows new blood to the area, because the layers of fascia are
now separated the blood is free to flow to the areas that have been adhered and stagnate. This allows your patients to have increased circulation, faster healing and the possibility of decreased adhesions.
Annis Downey, RMT and Pam Wilson, RMT have been practicing cupping massage therapy since 2010. Annis has been practicing massage since 2006 in multidisciplinary clinics and currently practices in her own clinic. Post RMT graduation she studied courses in TCM acupuncture, German Auricular Acupuncture, aromatherapy, soft tissue mobilization, and Gusha. Annis joined the instructing staff of Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 2008 and has enjoyed educating future massage therapists as well as keeping current with latest therapy techniques. Pam has been practicing massage since 2003 and is currently working in a multidisciplinary clinic. Some of the courses she has completed post graduation include: Myofascial Release Level I and II, Thai Yoga Massage Level I and II.
